When I first read the Hall references in Goodpeed several years ago, I wondered if they applied to John Hall of Dickson County (bef1774-1833) or John Hall of Green Co., AL. (1795-1870). More recently, I have wondered if the 1812 reference applies to either, An 1810 census would be helpful, but there doesn’t seem to be one for Dickson Co. I think the John Hall whom Goodspeed has in Dickson bet 1800 & 1810 and was "corner" is John Hall of Dickson Co. He would have been at least 36 yr old in 1812. His son, John of Green Co. AL would have been 17 – a slightly more likely candidate for military adventures. Linda shows us that one of the John’s in the 1820 census is not ours. A posting on the Hall Genforum (message 10623), cites a Pension Application for a John Hall who fought in Captain Cuthbert Hudson’s Company of the Tennessee Militia. This John Hall can be found on Family Search and also on WorldConnect (3021502), but information is scant. He was b. 1782 in VA, m. 1805 Rosanna Brown in Elbert Co. GA, d. 1867 in Dickson Co. clearly this is not our John Hall, so now we have at least two “extra” John Halls in Dickson around 1812-14.

Goodspeed’s list of 1812 soldiers does not list Capt. Cuthbert Hudson. The Regimental History of TN Units (www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/military/1812reg.htm) list him as one of the Captains of Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Gunmen or Cavalry, Commanded by Col Robert Dyer, and drawing men from various counties including Dickson. Cuthbert Hudson, b. abt. 1760 in VA is the son of Christopher Hudson and Carrie Byrd (World Connect 13394). I think there was also a Cuthbert Hudson presence in Elbert, GA. - possibly a grandfather of the Capt.

I have never seen any genealogical report indicating that either of our John Hall’s fought in the War of 1812. In particular, I think Jas. Petty Hall, probably the most detailed biographer of John Hall of Green County, would have mentioned it if his daddy had been an 1812 Veteran. However, it is difficult (impossible?) to prove a negative.

This is a quick study and very unscientific. I hope somebody proves me wrong.

Which John Hall was that?

Actually there must have been three John Halls in Dickson Co abt 1814. Virgil White’s “Index to War of 1812 Pension Files, Vol I:A-I “ , Lists the following on p. 903:

“John, Susanah (Yarall) WC-2665, m Jan 1813 Anderson Cty TN, sd 7 Jun 1865, wd 6 Aug 1871, srv Capt A. Braden's Co TN Mil as a Pvt, lived Anderson Cty TN” This is the one that Linda cited in her posting.

“John, Rosanna (Brown) WC-5288, m 7 Feb 1805 Elbert Cty GA, sd 5 Dee 1867 Dickson Cty TN, wd 10 Jan 1873 Charlotte TN, srv Capt Cuthbert Hudson's Co TN Mil, lived Dickson Cty TN” This is the one that I mentioned earlier.

Neither is our John Hall, (whom the Burke Co Land records refer to as John Hall Junr) and I don’t find him in above mentioned index.
