New Morrison News

Donald Godfrey - May 1, 2008

There is a file on ancestry.com that says Elizabeth Morrison, wife of Elijah Hall, was a daughter of James Morrison and Elizabeth Sloan.
I was given the information early on that she was the daughter of William Morrison. There is a file at the Carson House that has this information.
The only Morrison in the 1790 Burke Co, NC census was William Morrison and he is in the 1800 Burke County census. He has a will presented for probate Oct 1807 in Burke County.
A little history:
Our Morrison family moved from Landcaster Co, PA to Rowan Co, NC in the 1750/1760s.
Burke County was formed fron Rowan in 1777 and some of the family wound up in Burke County.
Iredell County was formed fron Rowan County in 1788 and some of the family wound up there.
James Morrison had land in Rowan County that was refiled as Burke County land as early as 1778.
There is a James Morrison in the 1790 Iredell County census. I don't know if he is the right guy or not but his wife Elizabeth is the head of the household in the 1800 Burke County census.
James morrison has a will, dated 12 apt 1790, no probate date, in Burke County. Names wife Elizabeth and her daughters. Son Thomas, minor, to receive Pennsylvania money from Patrick Campbell of Cumberland Co, PA. EXEC: John mcDowell, William Morrison, SR., my wife Elizabeth. Wit: James Hamphill, William Patton.
My notes:
1. I believe this William Morrison, Sr. is the father of James and he is the same one listed above who died in 1807.
2. He is also the father of William Morrison who witnessed John Hall, Jr.'s will in Dickson Co, TN and died in Dickson County.
Elizabeth Morrison's will was presented for probate Oct 1828. Proven by Jno McElrath and James Scott. Mary and Rachel qualified as exectors.
My note:
Mary and Rachel were daughters.
To bad James doesn't name his daughters, then we would know for sure.
There may be some bibles out there as Rosie Fuller's file on ancestry.com has full dates
of birth. She gives credit to a book by James William Morrison published in 2005.
I'm going to do more research.

What do you think????
