There maybe discussion about the lack of information coming from the Winter Payne Hall descendants. Maggie didn’t know her father’s middle name was Payne; she thought that the “P” was Pugh like her brother. My grandmother explained it to me this way. W.P. ( as he was called) died a young man of 39. His wife Mattie Jane Davis Hall was left with 5 small children. When she became ill (with stomach cancer), she had to place the children in several places with family because she was unable to care for them, even after selling their land. Mamie Elvira Hall Richardson was a married lady and Maggie Virginia Hall (my great-grandmother) went to live with her. Reeder Davis or Davis Reeder was sent to Waco, Texas as was Erline Hall. Erline Hall was 9 months old when W.P. died and 13 when Mattie died. Robert Pugh Hall was 10 when his dad died and he went to live with Wesley White Hall. They were scattered but the girls managed to keep in touch with each other. My grandmother wrote letters to her Texas cousins. The name, Reeder Davis, came from Mattie Davis Hall’s father whose name was Attoway Reeder Davis, probate judge in Eutaw, AL for 20 or more years. The Davis' family is an old Fairfax, Virginia family.
