A news item in the ACT announced the purchase of the 71 acre plot around the Cowee Mound on the Hall Farm property off HWY 28 a few miles north of Franklin NC. It was James Porters wish to return the mound to the tribe.
The mound may or may not have been built by Cherokee anestors but by the18th century, it was the commercial and diplomatic center of the mountain Cherokee.
William Bartram stated in his 1776 trip into the region that the area near the mound consisted of about 100 homes. A council house atop the mound was able to house several hundred people.
This purchase puts two-thirds of the Little Tennessee between Franklin and Fontana Lake
