Favor and news of John Hall Deputy in Sullivan County

Debbie Hall Daugherty - Jul 23, 2009

I would like to ask a big favor. If we are going to ensure the information viewed and shared with others is correct, we need to clean up any documents or postings that are now incorrect based on the Maryland will and 9 letters of John Hall i.e. several of his children were born in Sullivan County, NC not Burke as is listed on the web, Ancestry, and document files on this site. One letter shares the news of the birth of Tempy Hall so I know she was born in Sullivan County. John Hall moved to Sullivan in 1779 and sold his propery in Sullivan in 1789 (NC Archives) and moved to Burke in 1790 as he is listed on the Burke County 1790 census.

I have updated my Ancestry to reflects births between 1779 and 1789 as taking place in Sullivan County.

The Annals of Tennessee also shows that John Hall was elected as a deputy to represent the people from Sullivan County at the convention that took place in Jonesboro. He is the only John Hall at that time in Sullivan.

I sure could use some help researching Sullivan County as I am not coming up with a lot and can't seem to get anyone in Sullivan to assist.

Thanks. Debbie Hall Daugherty

"Todd County, Kentucky History" lists Micajah Hall's birth date as May 6, 1774. This birth date was also given to me by a distant cousin named Ida Griffin.

Thanks Phil. I have updated my Ancestry.com to indicate Micajah's full date of birth.

Debbie is correct, its important to get exact dates.
as a start, I was able to track down Sarah "Sally or Sallie" Hall married to Robert Sellers to the Sellersburg Cemetery in Sellersburg, Clark Co, IN.
Sallie Sellers, ??-09-1765, 09-27-1840.

sellersburg-s.html
A early Sellers researcher said the ? mark was Feb. or 02 and I've ask for a photo of the gravestone on findagrave.com.

Debbie,
Sullivan Co, NC was formed from Washington Co, NC in 1779, both in TN today.
I'm having trouble reading the letters, even with my new glasses.
I can't see that the letters are to Micajah Merryman, the only place I see his name is as a witness on the will.
How do we know the 1778 will is a MD will and not a NC will. The letters have a place but not the will.
Land in TN, NC at the time, was given to veterans of the Rev. War for their service and is in a special file in the NC archives.
Joseph White, father of Susanna, wife of John Hall, Jr, was a Capt. in the Battle of Kings Mtn in the Rev War and was in the 1790 Burke Co, NC census and moved his family to Knox Co, TN where he died about 1793. Martha White, widow of Joseph, gave their Burke Co, NC land where John Hall, Jr. lived to John Hall, Sr.
We need a time line where we indicate names, dates, places and sources.

The will...Micajah Merryman lived in Maryland for many years after John Hall moved way and John Hall sold off his land 2 months after the date on the will per Maryland records. His first letter with a date from Sullivan County was 1779. All letters are addressed to Baltimore County, MD.

For a small fee all these letters, will and a receipt for the purchase of household items (dated 1767) can be obtained from the John Hopkins Library in Baltimore, Maryland. Make sure you request a copy of the other side of the letter which when folded and sealed has the name of the person who is receiving the letter and the name of the person delivering the letter.

The letters were dated and addressed exactly as follows:
1. No date and was addressed to Micajah Merryman living near Col. Ridgely. It was hand carried by Edward Cox. Col.Ridgely lived in Baltimore.
2. August 6, 1779 and was addressed to Micajah Merryman
3. September 2, 1780 and has Sullivan County, NC written at the top of the page, addressed to Micajah Merryman.
4. September 10, 1780, Sullivan County on top of page. Addressed to MM. Delivered by Mr. Richard Gammon.
5. April 15, 1782 and has Shoats Ford, Sullivan County. Addressed to Micajah Merryman, Baltimore and carried by Richard Gammon.
6. May 16, 1783 and has Shoats Ford, Sullivan County. Addressed to Micajah Merryman, Baltimore County and delivered by Richard Gammon.
7. August 28, 1783 and has No Carolina, Sullivan County. Addressed to Micajah Merryman, Baltimore Co, Maryland and was hand carried by Moses Wilkerson.
8. November 21, 1783, Sullivan County, North Carolina and was addressed to Micajah Merryman Baltimore County, Maryland

The earliest land deed I show for John Hall is 1790 and as stated before he sold off property in Sullivan County per NC Archives in 1789.

P.S. The will and letters are in the Merryman/Crane Special collection. You can google Merryman Crane Special Collection and it will pull up and list what all is in the collection but of course you have to contact the John Hopkins Library for copies of actual documents. Thanks. Debbie

Hi Donald,
I wrote NC State Archives and got copies of all of John Hall's Sullivan County land deeds. They have them because it orginally was NC. Got confusing at first...NC, Virginia now Tennesse. Quite a geography education.
