A little help please: The will of John Hall (b. 1771, NC-d. 1822, TN ) of Dickson County, TN, AKA John Hall, Jun in his will mentions a daughter , Susanna.. James Petty Hall of Gainesville, TX in A brief Sketch of the Family History of John Hall, Sr. writes “ His only sister I have any knowledge of was Susan and married a man by the name of Quarles, and her and her husband both died in Arkansas, some where in the fifties. In less than Twenty-four hours of each other, leaving six boys and one girl, the oldest being about fifteen or sixteen years old5. And their request before death was that father and mother should come and get their children and raise them. I will remember father and mother leaving their own family of eight children and going after the seven little orphans and well do I remember the family of fifteen children all there at one time.” John Hall Sr. (b.1795, NC -d. 1871, AL ) was the writer’s father, the oldest son of John Hall, Jr. The 1860 Census for Greene County, Al, Springfield, NADA series M653, Roll 10, Page 977 shows in the home of John Hall, J. Quarels,13, M, Arkansas and B. Quarles, 9, M, Arkansas. My old Hall manuscript, posted in my file cabinet, has the entry “ David Berryman & Susanna Hall not dated” in the Marriage Column. Nowhere else have I heard of David Berryman, although his surname is a given name for several of John Hall’s descendants. Also in this same document, at the bottom of the page I find this entry: “Berryman and Susan torn out”. I find no references to Quarels family in AR of AL. I am fairly sure that I found a more detailed listing of the family in the Library edition of Ancestry, but lost the reference, and cannot find it again. Did John Hall of Dickson County have a daughter who was married twice and was AKA Susan, or did he have a daughter Susanna and also another daughter Susan, whose name was torn out. Toxey

I did a little research on Ancestry and found a OneTreeWorld record showing Susan Hall (b. abt 1804, TN) married to a Quarles (b. abt 1801, AR?). Their children are listed as follows: B. (b. 1841, AR); Joshua (b. 1842, AR); J J (b. 1847, AR); David W. (b. 1853, AR); Thomas T. (b.1855, AR); _______ (b. 1859, AR). I was able to locate four Quarles children in the 1860 Census who were living in Greene Co., AL, but born in Arkansas (including the two Toxey mentions). Based on this data, I think the birthyear for "B." Quarles was listed incorrectly and should be 1851 rather than 1841. J. Quarles matches up to the "J J". I also found a C. Quarles (b. 1847, AR) who was living with a James Carter (b. 1829, NC), a Planter, and his two year old daughter. Is it possible that J. Quarles and C. Quarles were twins or perhaps just born within a year of each other? The fourth child that I found was J. Quarles (b. 1842, AR) and this appears to be "Joshua". He was living with Allen Hall (b. 1816, TN) and his family while working as a Laborer. He is listed in the 1870 Census as J.I. Quarles. I have not been able to locate the younger children in the 1860 Census, but perhaps someone will come across them. Based on the information that Susan and her husband both died in the 1850's, I question whether a child was born as late as 1859. The 1860 Census for Greene Co. was recorded during July, so the children had been relocated from Arkansas and split up among several households by that time. (That record shows a marriage to a Benj C E Estes on 14 Dec 1840, but it is incorrect. The Susannah Hall who married B C E Estes was born in 1825 in AL and they continued to live in Alabama.) Perhaps this will be a step toward solving the mystery. Gilda

I agree with Linda, very good researching.
In John Patterson's ancestry.com file "John Hall" there are the children you list and two unk children, the one you have born in 1859 and another born in 1857.
In familysearch.org, Nova Dee Wade has the same info as John Patterson.
Nova and John were very early on Hall researchers and altho they had a few errors, they were very good starting points for searching.
Nova was a member until her death but I never could get John Patterson to answer, altho I put some post-em on his file.
Your link to Susan Hall is to the wrong one. These were
two different Susan Halls, one married unk Quarles and the other married Benjamin Estes.

Gilda, pretty good research. This person in WFT has this info wrong. That Susan Hall was daughter of John Hall of Springfield, AL not the daughter of John Hall of Dickson, TN. And the dates are funny. Susan was too old to be having babies in the 1859 era. What do you think? But the fact that you found these Quarles in Census is promising. Linda

On the 11 Oct 1850 Black Creek, Independence County, AR census is a family Headed by William Qualls age 60 born in SC and Susan age 37born in TN. Their children are Thomas G, age 13 born in MO, Martha K age 11 Borne in MO, David W 10 born in MO, Isiah age 8 born in MO, Joshua (same age as on 1860 census, same name as the cousin James petty describes as helping him move to TX)age 4 born in MO, and Calvin age 2 ( sames age a C Quarles with Patterson's in 1860 with brother Joshua.
There is a Matillda M McGee age 26 born in TN living with them.
I am sure this is the daughter Susana Hall that is named in John's will.
Joshua, David, Berryman, and Susana Hall are the youngest of the John HALL children and most likely to have traveled together to find their own plantation. None of them were married at the time of John Hall,Jr.'s death
On the Descenedants of John Hall Jr. In the Filing Cabinet, Susanna Hall is listed with all of the children mentioned above with identical ages.
James Petty's letter says that both Qualres died in the fifties and all of the children came to live with them.

If this isn't the right family it sure is a concidence, with all the same children's names.
I believe the same family is in the 1840 North Fork, Izard Co, AR census, with a male age 50 to 60 and a female age 20 to 30 and children in the right age brackets.
One problem, Jane Williamson (jane_williamson_1999@yahoo.com) has a file "Ledford/Fields" on ancestry,com where she says William Qualls had a 2nd wife Susannah McGee and names all the same children.
If shes right and this is our Susannah Hall, then Susannah was married 1st to a McGee.

I found that Joshua Quarles stayed in TX after going with James Petty Hall in 1867.
Joshua William Quarles was in the 1880 and 1900 Rains Co, TX census and the 1910 thru 1930 Angelina Co, TX census.
In the 1870 Clinton, Greene Co, AL census is a J. I. Quarles family, I believe this is Isiah.

I found a Family Group Record on familysearch.org for J. J. Quarles who was married 26 Dec 1867 in Greene co, AL to Mary C. Pendergrass. No other dates.
I think this is Isiah as Joshua was in TX by this time.
M. C. Pendergrass, female, age 17, born in AL was in the 1860 Union, Greene Co, AL census in B. and C. Pendergrass' household.
There are a number of ancestry.com files that say the children listed in the 1860 Pendergrass family are children of Ransom Pendergrass and Martha Elizabeth Ridgeway.
Calvin C. Quarles age 14 and Joshua Quarles age 16 were both pri in Co. C, 43rd AL Inf CSA in the civil war from Greene Co, AL.
There are a number of ancestry.com files with William Quarles. Several have his 2nd wife as Susannah McGee, none as Susannah Hall.
I think someone assumed Susannah McGee because Matilda McGee is in William's household in the 1850 census.
C. C. Quarles age 32 born in AR is in the 1880 Winston, MS census with his family.
I can't find any connection for James Carter to our hall family. Does anyone have a connection.

It appears that James Carter was Calvin Quarles' brother-in-law. James Carter married Martha Quarles on 12 Dec 1858 in Greene Co., AL. (Alabama Marriage Collection, 1800-1969). I think the M. Carter (age 2, born in Missouri) listed in the 1860 Census with James Carter and C. Quarles is actually Martha Quarles and that her age was recorded incorrectly.
Thus far, I have not located an 1870 Census record for them. I did find an 1880 Census record for Louisville, Winston Co., Mississippi, that lists a household with a widowed Martha Carter (age 39, b. Missouri), sons James W. Carter (age 18, b. Alabama) and William Carter (age 12, b. Alabama).

Ella Turner, granddaughter, age 14, born in TX, was in the 1910 Upshur Co, TX census in Mary Quarles' household. Mary age 61, born in MS.
Several ancestry,com files say S. Quarles was married 21 Aug 1888 to James Frank Turner in Upshur Co, TX.
Sarah L. Hayden, wife, age 49, born in MS. was married to Charlie Hayden, age 52, born in KY and they are in the 1920 San Augustine Co, TX census with her daughter Bessie Turner listed as step daughter, age 27, born in TX and 3 Hayden children, Sybil, age 12, born in TX, Mary, age 9, born in TX and Ophelia, age 4, born in TX.
Sarah L. Hayden, wife, age 59, born in MS, was in Charles Hayden's household in the 1930 Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA census with her daughter Bessie Turner, listed as stepdaughter. age 38, born in TX with Mary and Ophelia Hayden.
Bessie Turner, born 3 Dec 1896 and died Dec 1982 in Shreveport, LA is in the SSDI.
Charles T. Hayden, died 7 Mar 1942, age 74, and Sarah L. Q. Haden, died 25 Jan 1948, age 76, both in Rapides Parish, LA, from LA Statwide Death Index, 1900-1949.

Been a busy year for me.
I am still looking for help finding Berri(y)man and Margaret(family name unknown) HALL's Marriage info. I suspect they were married shortly before or after Berriman's father, John(born 1776, died 1822) HALL's death. In an earlier message I wrote Joshua, David, and Berriman traveled together. The three of them appear on the 1830 Greene County, AL census with a female aged properly to be their mother Susana WHITE HALL.
In your message that I am respnding to, Did you ever hear from Jane Williamson about the William and Susannah McGEE QUALL family?
This may help me in my search for Berriman and Margaret or produce another mystery for me to pursue.
There is also an interesting mixture of Mc GHEE, McGEE, McHEE and McKEE of families surrounging this HALL family on almost all of the census I have been able to research online.

It appears we have found the right people. We have to explain an 11 year having a daughter or reconcile Susana's age being wrong on the census, which is what makes sense.
It is more likley that Susana is Matillda's mother than William having another wife before Susana. Either secnario is possible. I am sure this is our Susana based on James Petty Hall's letter.
All the other children are the right ages for Susana to be their mother

Now maybe some help with Berriman and Margaret's marriage place and date.
Also Margaret's family name.
Also their other daughter born between 1825 and 1830.
Their daughter Malona is my Ggramma's guardian, according to filings in Lavaca Court of Estates. Susana Rutha Smith is the daughter of "John Smith and wife of Mississippi, deceased"
I belive this un-named daughter is Malona's sister and Berriman and Margaret's daughter.
Berriman is on the 1830 Greene County, AL census and 1840 Sumpter Couty, AL census with two daughters born between 1825 and 1830.
Any help would be appreciated.

Susanna (Susan) Hall b.1824 in Eutah,Alabama was my gg.grandmother. She was the daughter of John Hall and Elizabeth Anderson. She married Benjamin CE Estes. They had one son that survived. His name was Leonardas Estes (16 Feb 1864- 6 Mar. 1939).
He lived in Lauderdale County until his death in 1939. I have located him in the census records living with both parents. The Estes family moved to MS when Leonardus Lonnie) was six years of age according to the 1870 in Lauderdale County ,MS. My last census record indicates Susan, Benjamin and Lonnie still living in Lauderdale County. However, the name is mispelled and reads Beryman Esters. I am thinking maybe they died . Could they be buried in Salem BAPTIST cemetery -OLD TOWN, Lauderdale County, MS. Lonnie's only brother, Augustus W. Estes, is buried in Alabama at the rehobeth Baptist Cemetery. He was only 15years, 10mos. when he died. Apparently, Lonnie was born after Augustus' death. If you can supply any missing pieces to these documents I would be very grateful. Joanne Harris

I have checked the cemetery records and also the minutes of Salem Baptist Church. Neither mentions anyone with Surname Estes. However, there was a large Eastis Family in the church, with members in both AL and Ms. Some censuses spell their name Estis. My GGGrand father Wesley White Hall, Sr.married (2)Amanda Sarah Eastis, who bore all of his children.
