Micajah Merriman Hall, Son of Joshua Jr.

Apr 14, 2004
Linda,

Been trying to reach you but am having e-mail problems. I located that "dreaded", Merriman Hall and his "disappearing" family. You will find them in Arkansas in 1860. Benton County. They must have decided to take the scenic route to Missouri!

I've also concluded that the alias, "Giett/Hiett Hall", was a son of Merriman Hall and Caroline Hyde. Jesse "Hyatt" Hall died in Macon County, MO sometime after 1870.

This is all I have on the line. I did determine they all apparently used their middle names. Hope this helps. Good luck with your move to TX and keep in touch!

Thanks for all your invaluable help, Danna. I will check the 1860 Benton County, Arkansas records asap. I'm in the middle of packing etc for the movers to arrive on the 29th, so it may be awhile before I get my computer set up again and re-subscribe to Ancestry.com. I sure am going to miss having access to the LDS Family History Center here in Mesa!!

Linda,

You're welcome. Given time, you will resolve all the mysteries surrounding the family! I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I should have thought to look in Benton County, AR a long time ago. The 1860 Arkansas census gives us another mystery. One of Merriman's children was listed as born in Iowa.

I went a little further with Jesse Hyatt Hall and found he appeared on the 1930 Census of Cole County, Missouri. Aged 89. I also noted that one of his children was born in Arkansas. The family must have remained in touch with the Benton County Halls and perhaps moved back and forth. Makes it hard to determine if Merriman Hall died in MO or AR.

Thanks,
Danna

I can hardly wait to get back on this, but sorting, packing and moving must come first. Thanks again. It would help a lot if you could give me the source detail on what you found in Arkansas, i.e. name, page number etc. I would really appreciate that since I won't be able to go to the Family History Center and look at all the pages.

Linda,

I agree, moving comes first. Maybe you'll be able to work on the your Texas lines after you get settled in.

Mariman Hall, M 40 Farmer 400 Born: North Carolina
Caroline, F 38 Born: North Carolina
Hyatt, M 19 Born: North Carolina
Harry, M 17 Born: North Carolina
Joshua, M 15 Born: North Carolina
Roxanna, F 11 Born: North Carolina
Harriet, F 8 Born: Iowa
Carolina, F 6 Born: Missouri
[Ref: U.S. Census Schedules, 1860 Benton County, Arkansas, # 832, p. 128, Sugar Creek Township].

Also, I looked at the son of James Harry Hall. Listed as Phelix, born 1874 in MO. I found:

Felix Hall, age 25, born: Oct 1874 in Texas. Listed as single and his occupation given as a Logger. He said his parents were born in North Carolina. Some discrepancies, however, I'm sure it is him. He disappeared after that.
[Ref: US Census Schedules, 1900 Chehalis County, Washington, # 552, p. 109, Aberdeen Precinct].

Couple of Corrections. Jesse Hyatt Hall died in Cedar County, MO. Not Cole as I previously wrote.

Also, the daughter of Merriman, should be listed as Caroline. I listed her as Carolina. Appears I've been in Carolina too long and am beginning to get confused! Smile.

Thanks, Don. Your info corresponds with some of what I have on this family. I will email you a report from a research file I created to search for ancestors of my grandmother, Louisa Merriman Hall. I'm still trying to collect the dots and this file is just a draft to help me keep folks straight. I need to find marriage records for James H. Hall (son of Merriman and Caroline) and Cynthia A. ? - the parents of Louisa M. and Lettie E. listed in Dwelling #158, Family #159, page 405 of the 1870 census for Lanes Prairie Twp., Maries County, MO. But for now I am in the process of moving back to Texas after 40 years in Arizona. Big job and an emotional move for me. I hope to get back to family research soon.

Don,

I believe James Harry Hall is listed beside of his mother on 1870 Census of Maries County. In error, the census taker didn't list the surmame of Hall. I could not find the son, Joshua Hall, but maybe you or Linda can come up with something.

Just returned from Cherokee County, NC, which is an eight hour round trip. Will post a few photos from various cemeteries soon, but won't take up too much room. Living beside of the cemetery is Mr. Ralph Stiles. He knows a lot about the Halls as well as other families. He is in his mid-eighties and loves company and sharing his many stories!

Hi again,
Found these bits of info on this Hall family:
www.ancestry.com-NC Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868.
Mycajah M. Hall and Jane Caroline Hyde, Macon Co, NC, no date, Bondsman: John Hall, Jr.; Witness: H. G. Woodfin.
Everyone seems to agree that the marriage was 2 Dec 1839 in Macon Co, NC. I can't verify.
Jamey Caroline Hyde was born 8 Jun 1822, from her father John Hyde's bible.
Caroline Hall Marshall's obituary says she was born in 1855 in Cole Co, MO, so I have to assume the Micajah Hall who had land in 1856 in Cole Co, MO was her father.

Thanks. I can't verify their date of marriage either. According to 1860 Benton County Census, the family was in Iowa prior to Missouri. Sometime around 1852.

Original roll shows the census taker spelled out the word Iowa. May indeed be a mistake though.

Hi Don and Danna. I'm still in trying to get settled in here in TX but wanted to pass on some info I've received over the last few days from 3 ladies who are doing Hall research (Sharolyn McCoy, Wanda Blackwell, and Margaret Gentges who is a geneologist in Osage County/ Maries County. MO).

1. Merriman M. Hall and Caroline and family were on the 1860 census for Benton County, PeaRidge, Sugar Creek Twp, Arkansas Fam #832/826 23 Jul 1860:
_____________
Mariman Hall 40 Farmer 0/400 NC
Carolien wife 38 NC
Henrutt 19
Harvey 17
Joshua 15
Roxanna 11 IOWA
Harriett 8, MO
Caroline 6
__________________

2. James H. Hall married Cynthia Ann Francis 5 Dec 1867 in Adair County, MO That Cynthia Francis is the daughter of Samuel Frances b 1819 OH and wife Elizabeth.

In some places James H. appears as James Harry and in some James Harvey according to the ladies. From what I had seen before I thought it was Harry for sure, but then again....

My subscription to ancestry.com expired just before I moved and there is no point renewing it until I can get back to my research. But didn't want to lose this in the meantime.

Hope all is well with you.

Linda
